History & Culture

Zagreb history lasts for nine centuries. Its name was mentioned for the first time in 1094, when Hungarian king Ladislaus 1st found a diocese on Kaptol hill. It received the privileges of a free royal town early in the medieval period and by the 17th century, when the University of Zagreb was founded, had become the region’s political centre.

Treasures of history

Zagreb Museums

Top Zagreb Museums include the Museum of Broken Relationships - which both celebrates and mourns marriage and love affair break-ups - the crowd-pulling Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Arts and Crafts; which celebrates the city’s creative heritage.
