Impressive after 900 years

Zagreb history lasts for nine centuries. Its name was mentioned for the first time in 1094, when Hungarian king Ladislaus 1st found a diocese on Kaptol hill. It received the privileges of a free royal town early in the medieval period and by the 17th century, when the University of Zagreb was founded, had become the region’s political centre.

Zagreb History

From the origins of the city in the Upper Town, through the Austro-Hungarian

period, President Tito and the struggle for independence, the city’s chequered past make for fascinating exploration. Its cultural prominence can be traced via the Croatian National Theatre, Lisinski Concert Hall and Zagreb Arena, plus many smaller theatres and venues.
